Shinjuku Gyoen was completed in 1906 as an imperial garden. It is a representative example o a modern wester garden in the Meji period. The garden was designed by Henri Martine, French horticulturalist, under the concept of Hayato Fukuba who was an agricultural scientist in the Meji and Taisho period. This large garden consists of the following three distinct garden styles: English landscape garden - An extensive lawn, dotted with zelkova, tulip poplars and other large trees that create an open space in this garden. French formal garden - This beautifully symmetrical garden features central rose beds and rows of sycamore trees on both sides. Japanese traditional garden - A stream of winds its way through this circuit style garden. It has Kyu-Goryo-Tei (known as the Taiwan Pavillion) and two teahouses, Shoten-Tei and Rakuu-Tei.
